Duke Ellington’s music still intrigues and beguiles the contemporary jazz musician. Even several generations on, the listener cannot help but be surprised and startled by the imaginative orchestrations. This music is an abject lesson in how to communicate with an audience by simultaneously being instantly accessible but never clichéd. The Far East Suite takes us on an exotic journey, so much so that you can almost imagine being on tour with the band and being part of all the heady and intoxicating experiences of Far East travel. Recorded in Dec 1966, all songs were composed by Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn except the last track, which was by Duke himself. Probably the best known track by the pair is Isfahan, a city in Iran, and it featured the sublime sax of Johnny Hodges.
